On Amazon, I keep seeing reviews of heaters overheating and killing fish! What heaters do you use for your 10g?

I have an ehiem jager 50W heater and have had no issues with it. It's in my 5 gallon but it should be big enough for a 10 gallon too.

The possibility exists of any heater running rampant and killing the fish, or shocking you, but mostly it's people that don't read and follow directions crank it up, and come back later and find fish stew.
Supposed to set it close to temp and adjust it up slowly, not max it out and turn it down tomorrow.
I bought from Amazon.
HITOP 25/50/100/200/300W Adjustable Aquarium Heater, Submersible Fish Tank Heater Thermostat with Suction Cups
The 50W version for the 10 gallon, works great In a 10g or a 20g also but comes on more frequent on the 20g. Slowly adjust it up to the temp you want and it's stable. My two have been working fine, maintaining 82F for 4 months now on an 10g and 20g and $15 each. Not bad.
All of the heaters on Amazon have people complaining the Heater killed their fish, I guess some could be true but I believe most of it is operator error.
50w is about the smallest you'd want and you'd want it adjustable, not one of the autoset ones that max out at 78F.
If you want to spend more money there's some nice digital display ones, or smart phone controlled ones. But just a basic adjustable, take your time to set it up to the temp you want, works just fine.

I use both the fluval 50w adjustble heater, and the ehiem jager 50W in a 10 and 11 gallon. I find both work equally as well, although the fluval heater seems to keep it slightly warmer.

Take a look at the Neotherm heaters, or now Cobalt Aquatics.
I have a 75W in my 12gl QT tank (bookshelf tank losing heat fast, keeping temp steady in unheated room), as well as a 100W in my 20gl.
They are non glass, temp is easy to set and check.

I have a question. By bookshelf tank do you mean a longer tank? I'm buying an 11 gal "bookshelf tank" by Lifegaurd Aquatics and I'm wondering if the 50W heater I have won't be enough.

Yes, it is an Aquatop tank, 8" deep.
It is in an unheated room with ~20° temperature swings (luving in Utah), the heater keeps it pretty stable around 72°. Does it work hard at times? Sure, but with the 75W it does get the job done.

Hmm..where I am it's pretty cold a good chunk of the year, although my room is usually uncomfortably warm because of sunlight and the extra heat from my tanks. Thank you for informing me! I think I'll run the 50W heater and this old dingy 50W preset heat both in the tank.
