I first saw carrot dogs in a local market freezer and it did make me curious on how it would taste. Sausage sizzles are quite common in summer and earlier had nothing to offer for vegetarians. Now, however times are getting better, sometimes they do. More supermarkets offer vegan recipes. A trip to Ikea made me enjoy the veggie hot dog immensely. Kudos to Ikea for putting up vegan and plant based recipes. Here is our take on vegan carrot dogs.
This meatless hot dogs recipe is pretty simple to make. Carrots are easily available and so are hot dog rolls. It is a great recipe for Bento boxes too. Kids love to see each others lunch boxes. Seeing something similar makes them feel happy too. This is great especially when they have dietary restrictions. Try this recipe for your family, and you will not be disappointed! - BBQ Spice mix (I prefer the chipotle bbq spice mix, similar to this, you may take any spice mix that you prefer)
- salt as per taste

Instructions
- Peel the carrots evenly
2. Take the sauces and spice,mix them in a pan with water,Switch the gas/heat on the pan so that the marinade mix starts to cook
3. Add the carrots to the mix and allow to cook on low heat
4. Cover and continue cooking on low flame, pour the hot sauce mix over the carrots during the cook.
5. At the end there will be thick sauce mix left, when most of the sauce has cooked away, turn off the heat. You can also cook it on a cast iron grill for a few minutes, if you like to get grill marks on it.
6. Keep the carrot dog between the hot dog rolls or buns and top it up with tomato ketchup , mustard sauce.
Other hot dog topping ideas are smashed avocado with onions along with bbq sauce and mustard sauce.
Delicious! and really full of flavor!
Variation
- You can make a vegetarian hot dog if you want to serve cheese slices along with the vegan dog. Use a vegan cheese slice instead of dairy based, for easy vegan recipe. You may add some maple syrup instead of sugar if you like.
- If you like it spicy, you may add garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder, smoked paprika in the marinade ingredients as a variation.
Storage
You can freeze these carrots after you cook a batch. Heat them before you serve along with hot dog buns.

Notes
the tomato sauce I used was a reduced sugar tomato sauce, hence I chose to add little sugar.
FAQ
What are carrot dogs made of?
Yes, carrots and a blend of different sauce to give it that flavor. It is obviously more healthy as it has no processed meat , lesser calories and lesser saturated fat.
Why are hot dogs unhealthy?
It is full of processed meat and 80% of it has saturated fats. This increases risk of colon cancer and heart attacks especially when eaten regularly. It is better to eat the vegan option made at home.
