"One of the undercover agents bought drugs from someone who had picked them up at Claiborne's house," said Chapman.

"The case continued to expand in sLze and several were arrested during the raid." Claiborne's political career was shortened in 1991 when he pleaded guilty to using his city position to land a municipal painting job worth $2,600. He was placed on probation and served no jail time, but was removed from office for violating Alabama's ethics law. Before becoming district attorney, Chapman represented Claiborne in various legal matters and said their relationship had been good until Claiborne's drug dealings became known to local investigators. "You could say we've had a strained relationship since then," said Chapman. "(Claiborne) called me a drug dealer and a crook.

It just goes to show what some folks will do when they are charged themselves." I Chapman indicated the drug investigation in Conecuh and surrounding counties will continue even though several of the major players such as Claiborne are behind bars or headed that way. i "I feel sorry for John," said the prosecutor. U.S. District Judge Richard Vol-lmer sentenced Claiborne for conspiring to sell 150 grams of crack cocaine in south Alabama. Claiborne was arrested during a 1996 drug raid by state and federal officials. Claiborne's trial ended with a deadlocked jury and he subsequently was indicted by a federal grand jury on similar charges. Conecuh County District Attorney Tommy Chapman said the federal case evolved from the state indictment.

He said the state investigation indicated that Claiborne had been making up to $5,000 a week from his illegal drug activities. "When (Claiborne) was arrested two years ago, he admitted his guilt," said Chapman. "We found that his involvement was so large that dealers in Mississippi and Florida were providing him with drugs. That's why we asked the federal government for help." Assistant U.S. Attorney Donna Dobbins said that Claiborne pleaded guilty to the drug charges last March.
