How do I calculate the ratio of two numbers?

A ratio of two numbers describes the quantitative relationship between these numbers, i.e., it says how many times one number is bigger than the other number. The ratio A : B is read as "A to B". In fact, ratios are just another way of writing down fractions: the ratio A : B is the same as the fraction A / B.

For instance, if in a recipe you're told to use 200 g of butter and 800 g of flour, then the ratio of these ingredients is 200 : 800. Clearly, we need four times more flour than butter. In other words, our ratio can be simplified to 1 : 4. Mathematically, we've just simplified the fraction 200/800 to 1/4 by dividing both the numerator and denominator by 200. How do I simplify a ratio A : B?

If both A and B are integers:

List the factors of A and the factors of B.
Determine the greatest common factor of A and B.
Divide each A and B by the number found in Step 2.
Write down the new, simplified ratio.
