Manichitrathazhu is a 1993 Malayalam psychological horror flick, featuring Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Shobana in the lead roles. It’s regarded as one of the best Indian horror films ever made! For those not familiar with the title, this Fazil directorial served as the inspiration for Priyadarshan’s 2007 Hindi film, Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Interestingly, Manichitrathazhu has actually been remade in four languages, including Hindi — in Kannada as Apthamitra, in Tamil as Chandramukhi, in Bengali as Rajmohol. The plot revolves around a woman and her family, who believes she’s possessed by the spirit of a dancer.
2. TUMBBAD – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO | IMDb: 8.3
Set in Tumbbad, a rural village in Maharashtra, between 1918 and 1947, this horror film, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad, follows a family who is in search of an immeasurable ancestral fortune. This fortune is hidden in the confines of a decaying castle and is guarded by a sinister force.
3. PIZZA – DISNEY+ HOTSTAR | IMDb: 8
Pizza is a fantastic 2012 Tamil horror flick that commands your undivided attention from the first pizza that was delivered by the protagonist, Vijay Sethupathi. The plot converges multiple storylines that tie up to a house haunted by multiple spirits, who refuse to let Sethupathi free. But he eventually does escape – only to land right back where he was at the beginning of this gripping tale. The film was remade in Hindi, in 2014, but lacked the visual appeal of the original.
4. STREE – NETFLIX | IMDb: 7.6
This horror-comedy, set in a small, picturesque village, unveils the tale of a spirit named ‘Stree,’ who abducts men in the dead of the night and only leaves their clothes behind. Our protagonists: Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, Shraddha Kapoor and Abhishek Banerjee, however, find a way to outsmart her, but there’s a shocking twist at the end that leaves one pondering over the real ending of Stree’s saga.
